First 1,000 Days: Pre- and Post-Natal Nutrition

Baltimore Convention Center, Room 321

The first 1000 days is the critical transformative window from conception to an infants second birthday. Proper nutrition for both mother and child during this important period sets the stage for optimizing a childs cognitive function, achieving desired physical development targets, developing a strong immune system, influencing an infants food preferences and establishing excellent general health. In fact, a growing body of research indicates that careful management of nutrient intake and maternal body weight during pregnancy may alter a childs risk for obesity and chronic disease in adulthood, outcomes which have devastating economic and societal costs. A key aspect of the presentation will be a discussion of the changing nutrient needs throughout pregnancy and lactation and how to address them. Specific nutrients and their critical windows of intake will be highlighted, along with detailed approaches for achieving optimal intake via food choices and supplementation during each critical phase of the 1000 days. A healthy diet and an adequate supply of key nutrients are the foundation for a child reaching its full potential.
